Gay Pride in S.F.

The Gay Pride series was made when globetrotter/photographer Annette Den Ouden took a break while crossing the USA from the East to the West coasts as part of her prolonged photographic world trip in 1991.

Stunned by the conservative way homosexuality was frowned upon in the U.S. in the days when AIDS was considered the latest murderous ‘punishment from God’, she chose to photograph the LGBT community as they wanted to present themselves: as loving, creative, flamboyant people who find a temporary outlet for their fears and pain by joining together in an exuberant outbursts of celebration before the morning comes and they must return home to tend to their sick and dying friends.
