For this body of work the documentary photographer Annette Den Ouden photographed nomadic and religious lifestyles on several photo trips to Mongolia and Tibet. Proceeding on to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan she found that nomadic life and Buddhism has all but disappeared there.
The central Asian version of Islam is thus far not a prominent force in Kyrgyzstan.
Kazakhs are predominantly Sunni Muslims. In Uzbekistan the religion plays a large part in society and education.
